Virginia's Marquis Weeks caps off his 100-yard kickoff return for the touchdown.

Now that's just funny.

A novel approach to music piracy

Green Day has done something really, really cool. They are offering a 5-pack of custom printed blank recordable CD-Rs featuring the color artwork of Green Day.

I think this a really original way of confronting music piracy, and it doesnt suprise me in the least that its coming from a punk band first.

Despite what the site may suggest about the use for these cds, we all know what they are really trying to do is simply make the best out of what is for them a bad situation. I think its very admirable that instead of whining on about their legal property and suing random nobodies for all they're worth the band and the company got together and figured out a way to keep their integrity (what punk band would support copyright laws?) and still earn from their work.

It's been a while since I posted a flash game, so here's one for your amusement

Ouch

Craziest

Craziest is a very cool flash movie about one girl's love affair with the board game we all know and love: Scrabble. The animation is superb, and the story is somewhat reminiscent of the movie Pi.

Before and After Star Wars

I hate George Lucas.

He's done it yet again. In the newly released DVD box set of the original Star Wars Trilogy, he's made several "improvements." Most of them are fine, but one of them just pisses me off.

Lucas has removed the guy who used to play the ghost of Anakin Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi and replaced him with the kid from the new movies, Hayden Christensen.

I'm not kidding.

No mention of why Yoda and Obi-Wan are old and Anakin is young. Good jeorb Lucas.

A pretty cool article over at G4/TechTV is Before and After Star Wars. Kind of a "where are they now" type thing.

Scott Kurtz of PvP tells people like me to grow up, Penny Arcade has their usual brand of humor on the subject and SA had a pretty good Star Wars Photoshop contest.

The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect looked promising, even though there was one major strike against it. That strike, of course, would be Ashton Kutcher. He has already sucked his way through a couple of other movies, like Just Married and Cheaper by the Dozen (and how could we forget Dude Where's My Acting Ability?). It seems that any movie Ashton Kutcher stars in automatically turns into mud; mud with corn in it that is.

However, my gut feeling felt that this film would be good, even though Ashton was there.

I saw two possible outcomes: either this film would be a complete masterpiece, or a complete disaster. This is Ashton’s first role where he tries to act serious. Jim Carey tried to be a serious actor, too, and the results were pretty good. The difference is that Jim Carey has talent, so to put him in the same boat as Ashton is in my mind a heresy.

I saw the director's cut originally, and I will tell you that it is a much different movie including the changes within that version of the film.

This movie was great. The acting jobs were top notch, including Ashton himself. The plot of the movie is quite old indeed, rapidly springing to mind is the episode of the Simpsons when Homer changes the past to find everything perfect (Marge is gorgeous, Bart is well behaved, etc) except nobody seems to know what a "doughnut" is so he flees just as it begins to rain. Except the rain is doughnuts instead of waterdrops. But this movie pulled of the idea quite well, and despite myself I'm actually looking forward to Ashton's next efforts.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go slash my wrists.

Unusual Search Engines

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know of the major search engines like Google or Yahoo. But did you know that there are many other smaller or niche search engines out there that can offer you unique help? Let’s take a look at some of these and get some insight into how they can be of benefit.

Mooter Search

Developed in Australia, Mooter takes a different approach to showing results for your queries. Instead of delivering you “flat” search engine result pages with lists and lists of results, Mooter delivers its results in cluster categories. For instance, if you type the word “labrador” you will see clusters of categories related to your term into which you can drill: organization, retrievers, Canada, map, band, and nature. If these aren’t the results you are looking for you can simply click on the “next clusters” link.

Mooter is beneficial because unlike many search engines, you don’t have to perpetually backtrack and/or type in different sets of key terms in order to reach the result you want in the first place.

Girafa

Girafa, which boasts that it “visualizes the Web,” shows its users more than the average list of results. Enter the term “marketing” into its Visual Search and not only will various related sites show up, but so will screenshots of each site. Talk about making a split second judgement! Now if you like the look of one site over another, you might just head there first…and buy from them!

Thumbshots.net

Part of the Open Directory Project, Thumbshots.net is similar to Girafa, though Thumbshots.net starts with a directory of categories so there are two ways to search. Once you enter your search query you will see thumbshots on the left side of the screen followed by the title, description, and url of the site.

WiseNut

WiseNut, developed by LookSmart, is simple and easy to use. WiseGuide is like Mooter because it clusters your search into different categories like a directory but on the same first page, it will also display “normal” flat search listings.

Moreover, you can actually Sneak-a-Peek into each site result. Under each normal search listing you will find a description of the site followed by a url and the Sneak-a-Peak hyperlink. If you click on this a large screenshot will appear directly under the listing after choosing this option. You may then simply close it once you are done.

iBoogie

iBoogie clusters its results too, but it displays them like the Windows Explorer screen: you see the flat search listings on the right-hand side while on the left you see clusters you can research by.

Like some of the larger search engines, iBoogie allows you to search for your term from just one search bar by other means: MP3/Audio, Images, Video, Directory or Advanced.

ProFusion

An extremely powerful meta search engine, ProFusion combines search results across multiple engines. What’s even better is that it provides you with the option to limit your search to include specific categories such as career, entertainment, government, etc. There are 22 categories in all and each one of them has a vast number of subcategories from which to explore. In other words, you can search sites for very targeted content all in one query.

Picsearch

Picsearch searches solely for images related to your key term/s rather than sites. Plug in the term “Johns Hopkins” and you will encounter various images of the school, affiliated magazines, hospitals, family vacation photos, etc. Once you choose a particular image you can find out the url source of the image as well as file size, file type, and image size.

Picsearch is family friendly; all offensive material is filtered out by advanced filtering systems.

On your next foray into web search, why not test one of these search engines out for size?! They may even be of more use than say, Google??

Another puzzle site

This one is a bit easier than the last one I posted (thank God).

Welcome.

General hint: the goal is to move to the next screen by deciphering what the next URL is, and later what the user & pass for the next URL is.

On screen #3 remember that False = off, and True = on. Post questions/comments in the comments section (btw, you can post comments anonymously even though it asks you for a username and password, there is a link at the bottom for anonymous).

Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory

Cool preview of SP3 over at GameSpot. Here's a highlight:

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the demo is the artificial intelligence. For example, while skulking around early in the level, we were detected by a guard who immediately opened fire on us. While we pulled Sam back around the corner to unsling his rifle, the guard kept firing. When we swung around the corner to open fire, the guard pulled back around his corner and disappeared from view. He then popped out and fired a burst in our direction. We then steadied our rifle on the spot where the guard's head would appear should he poke it out a second time to fire, but instead of doing that, he unexpectedly darted into the room faster than we could react. Being a locker room, the room had several rows of lockers, and the guard disappeared down the middle row only to reappear in the farthest row, not quite where we expected him to be. After firing another burst, he ran out of the room and back to where he had been shooting from us originally, and it was only from a lucky burst when he popped out again that we finally managed to nail him.
